According to reports, investigators have received over a thousand tips and leads, but many of them conflict with each other. Some messages claim Nancy was held for ransom, while others suggest different and unverified outcomes. Authorities have not confirmed any of the ransom notes, and the situation remains unclear.

Former FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit researcher Ann Burgess has suggested that the kidnapping may not have been purely financial. Speaking in an interview, she said the act could have been driven by personal motives rather than money. She raised the possibility that the goal may have been to emotionally impact Savannah Guthrie and her family.
